I did see the Blackfish documentary and it made me vow to never visit any place that holds captive cetaceans. One thing that enraged me the most was the way Seaworld would take young captive-bred orcas away from their mothers and transport them to other parks. These are animals that stay with their mothers FOR LIFE. You just have to ask yourself. How would you feel if the people you saw every day stole your baby from you when they were only a few years old.

They’re pretty much used as slaves. They get captured out of no where. It’s like just sitting in you’re home with you’re family and then BANG! You just get taken away from you’re family. You also live in a bathtub with water and there Is sun shine shinning on you 24/7 and with the sunshine it will slowly burn you’re skin and you will just die. Sea world should be shut down permanently

I think one or two orcas that are born in captivity is enough per park to put on a show and educate the public about their wild counterparts that were near extinction. Which are still being killed by fisherman because they learned how to steal their catch and Japan killing them in the name of research. I think if ppl can see a animal in captivity up close and personal they may be more inclined to help protect them in the wild. Sea World does not need a dozen or more orcas at each park to accomplish this. If they only had one or two adult orcas at a park they would have the space and money to make deeper pools for them to spend most of their time in, other then when they perform. It takes a lot less money to take care of 2 then 20. Money that can be put into enriching their habitats and lives. As for artificial insemination, that has been done for a 100 years or more in cows, horses and even dogs. 25 years ago I used to own a kennel in the USA and wanted to breed with a champion male in the UK. It was a lot safer for the dog to just freeze his sperm and ship it to the USA then to take a chance on shipping a 100lb dog in freight to the US, then shipping him back where he would have to stay in a quarantine kennel for 6 months before he could be welcomed back to the UK and his owners.

This sealed the nail in the coffin for me to never go to Sea World again. I can't support a place that (in ANY way) makes the animals uncomfortable or pained.

However SeaWorld orcas average age is 20-30 while wild males is 30-50 and females range anywhere from 50-80 there are a few orcas that are likely in their late 80ties, early 90ties but 95+ its as rare as a captive orca reaching 55. and they would get incredibly sunburnt but I don't think they do anything for it

Zoological/aquatic-focused vet student with a degree in zoology here. Dorsal fin collapse is NOT a sign of depression or disease. It likely has to do with collagen breakdown due to whales in human care spending more time at the surface than their wild counterparts. Collapse DOES occur in the wild, just not as commonly as in captivity. Of the whales currently alive at all 3 SeaWorld parks, only Corky, Ulises, and Katina were born in the wild and have been in human care for DECADES. SeaWorld hasn’t taken wild-caught orcas in 40+ YEARS. These orcas were born in human care and do NOT have the skills to survive in the wild. “Setting them free” would kill them. (And yes, I think capturing them was wrong. Most everyone does. Hence why it's been so long since an Western aquarium has purchased wild caught orcas). Sea pens open up a whole other can of worms. Just one of the issues would be sudden barrage of pathogens that the whales have never been exposed to. Yes, the tanks could be larger. They were built in the 1980s when we had under 20 years of experience keeping orcas in human care. Most other zoo animals have been kept since the 1800s earlier, so we have much better ideas of what they need. SeaWorld had plans to significantly expand their orca habitats, but this was shot down by the city of San Diego (animal rights activists had a hand in it too, but that’s a different story). It was called the Blue World Project. Sadly, it is true that many of the original captive orcas died young. But as we've learned more about how to care for them, their life expectancy is stabilizing (and while some female orcas have been observed to live upwards of 100 years, this is in exceptional cases). There is nothing cruel about shows. Marine mammal training pioneered the positive reinforcement movement because there is quite literally no way to force an animal that size to do what you want. Positive reinforcement training is about building trust (this is hammered into us in vet school). Animals are never (and to be fair, physically can’t be) forced to “perform.” Training acts an enrichment for them, They ENJOY it (released dolphins have been seen performing learned behaviors in the wild just for fun). Shows are nothing more than training sessions in front of an audience and set to music. The "marine mammal method" has expanded into other zoo species as well, since it is much easier to train an animal to voluntarily participate in husbandry and medical procedures than to hunt them down and sedate them every time. It's also worth noting that training would continue in a sea pen environment, since it helps prevent boredom. They are not depressed. Try looking at some other videos on accounts like EchoBeluga, and you can see the orcas playing with their toys and environmental enrichment even when trainers aren’t around. They aren’t starved. Starved orcas have “peanut head.” These animals receive complete monthly physicals from veterinarians to ensure they’re in superior health. SeaWorld is an AZA-accredited facility responsible for rescuing and rehabilitating 35,000+ animals. AZA accreditation is awarded to only 10% of zoological facilities in the US and demands superior animal care and a dedication to conservation and public education. Free Willy was a good movie, but it was PRETEND (it's worth mentioning that Keiko, star of Free Willy, was released in real life and died shortly after without ever integrating into a pod). Blackfish was an extraordinarily well-made propaganda film filled with misinformation. With the exception of John Hargrove, the trainers interviewed worked with the orcas for a quite a short time and are discredited by many other trainers who stand proudly by their work. But, at the end of the day, you got your wish. When this generation of orcas is gone, there will be no more left in human care in North America, and we will have lost the opportunity we had to know and study these animals. A final note: regardless of you opinion on SeaWorld, they are responsible for the public's love of killer whales. Prior to the 1960s (and the first captive orcas), killer whales were seen as vicious fish-stealers and were used by the Navy for target practice. It wasn't until Shamu, Namu, and the others that most people realized what intelligent, beautiful animals they were. (I'm very open to civil discussion and respect different opinions! But I will not respond to comments telling me I'm stupid or evil or uneducated. I was anti-SeaWorld myself until I got earned my degree and started talking to keepers, veterinarians, trainers, and scientists in the zoological field).

Seaworld has some great rides and water slides, but they should just do away with the Orca shows. Same with any marine park. They don't call them killer whales for nothing.

3:17 are you serious?? Yeah, the survival rate for Orcas in captivity has gone up since the '96 study but ONLY to 25-30 years. So instead of dying at 14 years old, they die between 25 and 30 years old. That's ONE QUARTER of their natural life. That's nowhere near equal or longer than wild Orcas 🤦‍♀️

I never liked how small the orca tabls where... so I'd agree w mat damon I visited a few times to see the sea otters and the sea lions and the actual theme park but otherwise i havent visited since it's just too sad to see really. I'd love to see orcas swimming like really swimming I'd totally love the idea to create an orca highway along the entire perimeter of the park would allow the orcas to swim in straight lines, big gradual turns, and would allow visitors to see the orca in as natural as a condition as possible. Idk why there so against revamping the orca area... could put the orcas and dolphins, maybe a few sharks and schools of fish in this "super highway" make it like an actual aquarium. Maybe once a day have some of the orcas do the leaps and splashes in the show tank, but otherwise they can swim, dive, and interact with other animals like they would in the wild.

Yes and sharks also eat fish but you see plenty of sharks in aquariums w fish. If their not hungry they wont kill anything. The key is to keep them full
