We aren’t all perfect, as much as we think or hope we are. Even engineers, who are some of the smartest people in the world, make some mistakes. But when they do, the consequences can sometimes be deadly. From an explosion of molasses to a snapping bridge, here are 15 craziest engineering fails in the world.

Hey everyone! So its seems that the bridge from the #StarTopic is actually from Uruguay and not India! Wanted to clarify it, since one of our researchers made this small location mistake. Either how, what are your thoughts on the bridge?

#startopic I like it. I can see the benefit of slowing traffic down on a bridge. Less chance of accidents in an area that would be difficult to get rescue vehicles on in an emergency. Also, less chance of a vehicle going over the rail

Errr... The Tacoma Falls Bridge WASN'T an engineering failure: As you obviously don't understand how harmonics work; how might engineers know over 80 years ago? It was a FAILURE due to a MISTAKE. You need to look at the exChumpMeanderer-In-ClownShoes' INFRASTRUCTURE FAILURES from 2016 to 2020. AND your "researchers" obviously don't actually do any actual research. You're all just lazy.

The first shuttle wasnt ready until 1981. Therefore, no shuttle was ever used to rescue or assist Skylab, which came down in July, 1979.

At 4:12, the narration says 90 ft diameter, but the video shows 90 ft circumference. I could do the calculation to figure which gives 2.3 million gallons in a 50 ft tank, but I don't care.

that tower in north korea means that their capital city is doa. one day that tower has to come down, it is built with concrete and rebar, when it comes down it will cover the city of pyongyang in concrete, the whole city. one day it has to come down, that type of construction doesn't last forever. in their best case scenario they will end up with an artificial mountain in the middle of their city, but they would still probably end up covering the city in concrete dust to reduce that building to a stable hulk (collapse the internal structure). getting rid of that building without destroying the entire city in the process is basically impossible. trying to implode it would reduce it to powder, and ultimately it will collapse under it's own weight. pyongyang is fucked.

about the second topic, the bridge in India. we don't know why the engineers had built it like that rather than keeping it straight. there are so many reasons why we should avoid certain spots in the water. as a civil engineer myself, i know these reasons. maybe because the sand or silt that the footing is to be built on a straight basis is not as strong as the ones in the circular path. it's wise to choose the safety of the motorists rather than the budget of the government right?

One of Titanic's coal bunkers was on fire before it even left England. The Captain made a decision to go full steam ahead because the Titanic might have run out of coal. That would not have gone down well especially on its maiden voyage. There were some significant design issues such as steel specifications for the exterior hull skin, bulkhead design etc. The rest is history.

How can Chernobyl be discarded?
11 өдрийн өмнөJulie Baker
Anyone else notice a suspicious void in this list? Shouldn't Chernobyl have made the cut? That town is STILL a nuclear hot spot to this day, and has been for the last 35 years.
11 өдрийн өмнөJulie Baker
@Pablo Hammerly the flaw in design doesn't necessarily HAVE to be in the physical engineering. In the case of Chernobyl, the flaws were in the system . The people working there KNEW there was a problem. In the west; Private Fred sees a problem, so Private Fred pushes the red button. But in the USSR, if Private Fred sees a problem, he has to tell Corporal Joe. Corporal Joe goes back over everything Fred did and sees that; yeah, there's a problem alright. So Corporal Joe has to report it to Sargent Mac. Sargent Mac AGAIN goes over everything, and sees there's a problem. So he has to report it to Master Sargent Henry. And after more redundancy, Master Sargent Henry reports it to Lieutenant Phill. Lieutenant Phill, rechecks and passes the buck up to Captain Jeff, who checks and passes the hot potato to Major Bob, who passes it to Colonel Ed, who passes it to General Al, who decides that they need to try to fix things. But after it's too late to just push the red button, General Al sends it up the next ladder of bureaucracy, till someone FINELY sticks their neck out and gives the permission to push the red button....after the whole shebang has already gone critical, and the wildlife for miles around are already glowing in the dark. Not ALL poorly engineered systems are HARDWARE problems.
8 өдрийн өмнөPablo Hammerly
@SonicSpeed0705 The Titanic sank due to multiple causes, some of which were engineering fails. Someone in upper management of White Star Lines (owner of the Titanic) decided that their rich passengers should be able to have views unobstructed by lifeboats, so a row of lifeboats on each side was removed from the design, since they concluded that an "unsinkable" ship would never need so many lifeboats. That's an engineering fail that was really a management fail -- after all, the engineer has to follow the orders from his bosses if he wants to keep his job, even if he thinks his bosses are idiots. Other engineering fails: 1) The steel used to make the Titanic was lower quality than it should've been -- it became brittle in cold temperatures which is why the rivets broke when the ship sideswipped the iceberg; 2) The watertight doors that were supposed to be closed in the lower decks were in bulkheads that didn't connect to the ceiling. A watertight compartment with a bulkhead that doesn't reach the ceiling isn't watertight. That's basic common sense, so there's no excuse for such an epic engineering fail. Other factors that led to the disaster or increased the death toll: 1) The lookout who was supposed to watch for icebergs didn't have any binoculars (epic management fail). 2 &3) The radio operator was ordered to focus on sending out telegrams from the rich passengers and to ignore warnings from other ships about icebergs, since the Titanic was "unsinkable," so those warnings never got to the captain who had ordered "full speed ahead," as he wanted to reach New York on schedule; 4) The Titanic left for New York with a fire burning the coal in the lower decks -- that weakened the steel hull which made it more vulnerable to damage from the iceberg (again, an engineering fail which was really a management fail); 5)Gates were locked, so the poorest passengers in steerage couldn't reach the upper decks -- almost all of them went down with the ship.
8 өдрийн өмнөPablo Hammerly
@Julie Baker: Chernobyl wasn't an engineering fail. If I recall correctly, the managers running the nuclear power plant were doing a safety drill, but the personnel hadn't been properly trained on safety procedures -- that's a failure of management and training, i.e. human error, not a flaw in engineering design.
8 өдрийн өмнөSonicSpeed0705
@billy manilli Can't say I have
9 өдрийн өмнөJulie Baker
@SonicSpeed0705 to be fair, there WERE some engineering fails associated with the Titanic. But, were it not for the coincidences you mentioned, they shouldn't have been anywhere NEAR enough to make it sink. And I DO think you are right about it being the one on the list that shouldn't have made the cut.
