My wife and I own a small farm with cattle and every time a cow begins to give birth, those vultures begin circling long before she delivers the calf. The vultures try to sneak in and steal the afterbirth. The other cows usually try to chase the birds off because it’s actually important for the mother to consume the afterbirth. It has a lot of nutrients she needs to make the milk, especially the colostrum milk the calf need with it he first 48 hours. We have no idea how those damned birds show up hours before the mother gives birth? I guess there may be some scent the mother cow emits, but I think they can recognize the posture a mother takes before giving birth. We can always tell when a mother is ready to deliver by her behavior and the way they lay down. I know that once one bird begins to circle, the other birds can recognize the circling pattern from miles away and know that means food, so they join in.
